Hmmmmmm what to do with a group of children on a wet and miserable day?
Make play dough that’s what! It’s super easy, inexpensive and kids love it – it is bright, fun, squishy and good clean fun to make and play with and it lasts about three weeks in the fridge. Teacher hat on…it is brilliant for imaginative play and motor skills too. An all round winner then!
My mummy used to make this with me and it is bringing back so many lovely memories 🙂
So, you will need:
4oz of flour
4 fluid oz of warm water with 1/2 a pack of jelly – melted and ready to pour – in the colour you want your play dough to be
1 tablespoons of salt
1 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda
1 tablespoons of oil
Let the kids get involved with all the measuring – they’ll love it! OK, so they might make a little bit of mess but they’ll learn so much. Just be careful with the jelly mixture if it is still hot.
Mix everything together in a saucepan. Keep mixing until all the lumps are gone.
Cook over a gentle heat until it thickens, stir into one whole lump of dough.
This stage does take a little time but it’s good exercise! You’ll know when it is done as it will become tricky to stir.
Once it is ready put it on a bread board and leave to cool.
After about 20mins let the little ones knead it and add flour to get rid of the stickiness.
Then it is ready! Let the kids play and watch their imaginations go wild. I love to see what they do with it and what tools they pick to use to chop it, mark it, cut it, roll it.
When you are finished playing find an airtight container to store it in and pop it in the fridge. If it gets sticky at any point just add a little more flour.
Have fun and let us know how yours turns out!
Be lovely!
