Hmmmm what hits me first as I enter the gorgeous new premises of Mummy Makes. Firstly there’s the wonderful tiles and vintage kitchen with it’s terracotta colours and stone floor. Liz has just moved into an old pottery workshop to expand her business and make lots more lovely fudge. Then there’s a heady mixture of sensations and smells – the caramelised sugar, the waves of vanilla essence, the warm feeling of crumbly freshly made fudge in your hand and the gorgeous way it melts in your mouth…There is something quite unlike any other treat that evokes childhood memories when eating this wonderful stuff. Perhaps it’s the fact that we all know someone when we were little who made fudge, a grandma, neighbour, family friend or mum and that cosiness it creates makes you feel warm and fuzzy.
Yes, I took one for the team and had a ball meeting Liz and finding our her inspirations and how Mummy Makes started out and like any good entrepreneur it started as part of a good cause and has grown from there. Liz started making fudge to help her daughter’s school raise money for a new build with a £15 initial start up! She did very well, infact so well that she thought there must be something in this and set about starting out selling from her kitchen. From her core flavours of Vanilla, Clotted Cream, Cappuccino, Chocolate, Ginger and Salted Caramel she has continued to experiment and develop the range to 35 different flavours! Her inspirations come from customers, visits to places (Lavender Farm) and just the desire to find new flavours which however strange they sound could be the next big thing.
Liz already has agreements set up locally to sell her Mummy Makes fudge and does the monthly craft fair at The Maltings, Farnham (1st Saturday of each month). Here are some photo’s from her wonderful stall all set out and ready for customers with tempting tasters of all her flavours.
You can buy direct from her too – so no reason to not enjoy the delicious stuff by post. Flat packed fudge direct to you, what’s not to love about that right?
