My daughter is nine. During her up bringing, I have never let her not do anything (obviously within reason) and she has had Barbies, trains, baby borns and toy cars. Now she’s nine, toys are increasingly taking a back seat, and she loves to whip up a play list on Napster to dance along to. On her latest playlist, I noticed that she is very much choosing affirming songs – songs that talk about strong women, who may have a hard journey along the way, but they can do it, mainly without a man, they may have to brush off some criticism, but the view is going to mighty fine when they get there. Basically, my daughter wants to sing and dance along to feisty, independent ladies who know where they’re going and maybe even rule the world – I’M RAISING A FEMINIST! WHOOP!

For your interest – a strident 9 year old feminist listens to the following tracks:

Little Mix – Salute
Katy Perry – Roar
Taylor Swift – Shake it off
Taylor Swift – Blank Space
Megan Trainor – Lips are moving
Miley Cyrus – The Climb
Fergie – LA Lover
Ariana Grande – Break Free
Beyonce – All the Single Ladies
Miley Cyrus – Can’t be tamed
Ellie Goulding – Burn
Ella Henderson – Ghost

Then all good feminists appreciate good male talent, so Maroon 5 and ‘Sugar’ made the list too.

Look out for my girl – you are going to hear her ROAR!
