Sonia has always loved photography, and after several friends told her she had a natural flair for creating beautiful images, she decided to take the plunge and set up her own photography business. The business gives her some flexibility to work around her school age children, it also gives many families a chance to record memories.
I recently undertook my first newborn shoot for Jon, Ngaire and their gorgeous baby, Ava. Ava was a tiny ten days old at the shoot, and the haste for the shoot so early in life was so Ava’s Grandma and sister who were visiting from Australia could be included in the shoot too.
In true Antipodean style, I felt welcome as soon as I arrived, and instantly the vibe was relaxed and easy going. As they got ready, I immediately began to shoot. My style is very laid back and natural, I don’t do stylised pictures of babies in flower pots and buckets!
The nearest we got to properly posed pictures, was when all the family sat on the sofa. Someone told a joke and immediately I captured a natural photo of them laughing and looking in any direction but the camera!
My final hurdle was the parents with their newborn: I found it hard to achieve without it looking formal and posed but the end result was just as we all wanted it – natural and beautiful.
Ngaire loved the photographs, and I am very much looking forward to my next shoot!
