Sometimes, you just need to celebrate your gal pals, don’t you? And how better than to take one of your favourites out for Afternoon Tea, just in time for Valentine’s or should I say, Galentine’s Day. The lovely folk over at Whittard’s Tea, invited us both over to their tea bar in Covent Garden to sample their Valentine’s afternoon tea.
Situated in the arches of the lower ground of Covent Garden, this quirky space has been transformed into a welcoming, cosy cafe, ideal for retreating to during these cold, storm-ridden February days.
The Valentine’s tea is just delicious: Finger sandwiches of coronation chicken, smoked salmon, cucumber and egg (classic choice, in my humble opinion). Of course, the obligatory scones, infused with tea (naturally) with clotted cream, marmalade AND jam – truly spoilt. And top of the pile were the sweet treats of red velvet cake (divine!) a jam-filled heart biscuit and a chocolate delight. Pretty perfect line up if you ask me.
Dry January is but a distant memory, and both my galentine and I indulged in a the tasty glass of prosecco, just the one mind, but I could have quite easily gone for another … ahem …
And what is an afternoon tea without its namesake? Whittard’s has a menu of FOUR pages of different teas. From black tea, herbal tea, roibos and green tea, it’s all there for the sampling. If tea doesn’t float your boat, you can choose coffee or chocolate and there is plenty of variety in those categories too. I went classic, and had a pot of Earl Grey. I particularly loved that the tea comes with an accompanying timer, so you know when it has brewed.
There was nothing I could fault on the tea, it was simply delicious, and a gorgeous treat. Of course, all that liquid does necessitate a loo stop, and sadly the premises has no onsite facilities, but the staff kindly give you a token to use the rather plush 2theloo, just next door.
And the icing on the cake (sorry for the pun!), the cafe is, as I’ve already said, in Covent Garden, one of my favourite spots in London. Ideal to carry on to the theatre, a museum, a browse around the shops or just a little bit of people watching.
Thank you Whittard’s for hosting us for your Valentine’s Afternoon Tea, I really cannot fault the tea in any way: The venue, staff and tea were all superb. If you are looking to show the love to your other half, best pal, offspring, parent or whoever this Valentine’s Day, this is a really gorgeous treat. And let’s face it, love really does make the world go round, especially fuelled by a scone with cream and jam.
